Course Description:

This course is intended to introduce students to Islamic portfolio management  and Investments based on practice of Islamic investing discipline. The course would show the difference between Islamic thinking and practice in the field of investing by shifting attunes towards halal Sharia compliance by enhancing the students’ awareness on general case studies and relate it to contemporary applications.  There will be more discussion based on the Malaysian economy in particular as a mature marketplace.  This course is an introduction to investment management.

Learning Objectives:

The objectives of the course are to develop an understanding of:

  • The practice of Investment Management.
  • The different styles of portfolio management.
  • Development by practitioners to apply the Islamic approach to investment.
  • Challenges which faces Islamic investment industry.

Course Outlines:

The outline of the course will build an understanding to Islamic understanding of investments and portfolio management.

  • Definition of portfolio management in relation to investments goals and the market place
  • Form an understanding to the meaning and the the different types of investments vehicles
  • The Challenges of competition and winning performance strategies

Investing in Islamic Funds, A Practitioner’s Perspective by Noripah Kamso

Grading and Evaluation:

  • Minimum passing grade 70%
  • Participation: 30% (10 assignments, 1.5% each)
  • Mid-Term exam: 20%
  • Research paper: 20%
  • Final exam: 20%
  • Oral Exam 10%

Guidelines for Research Paper:

As part of the course, you are required to submit a research paper. Students should write a research paper on one of the following topics:

At least ten (10) double-spaced pages (not including the introduction and conclusion).

1 inch margins.

12 pt size (Times New Roman).

Follow the standard research paper structure with a Table of Contents, Abstract or Executive Summary, Introduction, Main Body, Conclusion, List of Reference.

The Main Body should be organized into logical chapters and paragraphs.

When quoting Hadith, a notation indicating its authenticity must be clearly.
